'Danish Diaspora' an exhibition at The Danish Cultural Institute in Edinburgh in August/September 2014.

Danish Diaspora.

This exhibition will feature work of a group of highly recognized Danish makers who have made Scotland their home.
Coming from a Danish background - with its strong craft heritage and aestetic infusing their education and upbringing - their life and work are now thoroughly rooted in and inspired by the vast variety of Scotland wild scenery.
They have exhibited nationally and internationally and have actively engaged with and enriched Scottish craft culture.

My creative process involves a close relationship with the landscape and wilderness of the Scottish Highlands, a part of which is long hikes into the mountains, bringing back materials such as rocks and sediments to incorporate into my work.

Using sweetly scented willow, my inspirational baskets epitomize the elemental simplicity of combining natural materials with exquisite craftsmanship.
Showing subtle natural colors my baskets are beautiful & functional, beckoning us to get back in touch with the more elemental aspects of our daily lives.
Taking part in 'Making Weaves - The Basketmakers' Art' , the inaugural exhibition of The National Museum of Scotland's Craft Gallery in 1998. It toured to many Scottish venues as well as The NEC, Birmingham and along with the accompanying courses raised the profile of the Scottish Basketmakers Circle to a new level.
In 2001/02 my cousin, Anne Marie Bech, a texile weaver and I curated and toured our exhibition 'Weaving in our Genes' to 5 Scottish and 4 Danish venues.
The solo shows which followed on from attendance at the last Chelsea Craft Fair and the first Origin share the pinacle of achievements:
'Pods/Cochuil' at Taigh Chearsabhagh, Lochmaddy, North Uist
'The Lie of the Land' at Rochester Art Gallery
'Willow Works' at The Hill House, Helensburgh and An Tobar, Isle of Mull
Taking part in juried exhibitions abroad - from New York to Munich, from Sweden to Ireland - has added an extra piquancy to exhibiting and a very special feather to my cap!
As has having my work featured in big London stores eg The Aram Store, Fortnum & Mason and lately The Conran Shop.

Nickolai Globe

Nickolai Globe
missionhousestudio.blogspot.co.ukI produce individual studio ceramics, influenced directly by the physical environment of the rugged North West. My new work takes ceramics to the edge of craft, where sculpture and function merge. My high fired stoneware bowls and vessel forms become geological and carry with them a deep reflection of the terrain. Drawing from elements of Zen and the unpredictable, my work reflects, rather than emulates nature.
Nickolai worked with the COBRA Group ceramic artist Erik Nyholm in Denmark. He worked with Erik on large scale architectural ceramics and sculpture. Following Denmark, Nickolai studied traditional woodfired production under Tim Holloway. Here he gained discipline in producing traditional, functional, woodfired, stoneware pottery whilst studying ceramics at Southampton University.
Now he has fused himself to The Isle of Harris. High fired earthenware, porcelain, stoneware and local minerals is his palette, the terrain of the Hebrides his muse. His new work takes ceramics to the edge of craft, where sculpture and function merge.

I make boxes in different kinds of wood, aluminium, copper and other materials, such as bone, concrete and resin. Sometimes I use driftwood to give a contrast to the polished and smooth wood and metal. The boxes are all functional, although they are not made for any specific use. I love the process and the silent language of materials.

'My work is primarily a mix of gold and silver.
I like the contrast and the tension between the two metals.
I like a rough, oxidised surface next to a highly polished edge.
I like a sparkling diamond on rusty metal.
I like the mystery of black pearls on woven gold and silver.
I like simplicity in design.
One of the absolute highlights of my jewellery career was to be invited to exhibit at Electrum Gallery in London in October 2001 – it is one of the most internationally recognised and respected galleries on contemporary jewellery.

Tahitian Pearl Trophy UK: runner up in the brooch category in 2003, winner of three categories in 2005: bracelet, necklace, pearl row.

Short listed for The Balvenie Artisan Awards 2004.

Roger Billcliffe Gallery, Glasgow have had Focus on my work in 2003, 2006 and 2008 and the gallery has always my work on display
